- Trencherman Mickey Spillane, 71, was getting to be better
- known for slugging down Miller Lite than for batting out
- hard-boiled whodunits. But in November the writer will flex old
- muscles with The Killing Man, his first Mike Hammer tale in 19
- years. "It's surprising how many people kept asking for another
- one," he says. Our hero is still tough as nails: when he isn't
- sporting with women, he's always ready "to blow somebody into
- a death of bloody, flying parts." Not great taste, maybe, but
- definitely more filling. "I don't write for art's sake,"
- Spillane says. "I write for money." He's yet to have a case --
- let alone a six-pack -- of writer's block that he couldn't
- handle: "If I need money, then I unblock real fast." His pay
- this time: $1.5 million.
